Activity 11: Design a listening activity

Listening Activity
Level: Elementary or Pre-Intermediate level.

Age: Kids up to 12 years old.

Warm up:
The teacher would ask their students if they know any Fairy Tale and ask them which is their favorite. Them, he'd show them the opening scene of Disney's 'Tangled' and ask them to explain Rapunzel's basic storyline to the class.

Main Activity:
Students would be asked to complete the missing verbs (-ing forms) from the movie's main song 'I see the light'. The audio would be listened three times.

All those days ________ from the windows
All those years outside ________ in
All that time never even ________
Just how blind I've been
Now I'm here, ________ in the starlight
Now I'm here, suddenly I see
________ here, it's all so clear
I'm where I'm meant to be

-CHORUS-
And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you

All those days ________ down a daydream
All those years ________ in a blur
All that time never truly ________
Things, the way they were
Now she's here ________ in the starlight
Now she's here, suddenly I know
If she's here it's crystal clear
I'm where I'm meant to go

-CHORUS-

Follow up:
As a consolidation exercise students would be presented with an activity in which they'll have to choose between the gerund and simple present forms of the verbs in brackets to complete the sentences.

We go ______ [to swim] every week.
Let it ______ [to be].
He dreams of ______ [to become] an actor.
They enjoy ______ [to cycle].
It is not easy ______ [to find] good friends.
My friend is afraid of ______ [to fly].
Jane is good at ______ [to read].
He wanted ______ [to buy] a new videogame.
I'm crazy about ______ [to dance].
You must ______ [to come] to my party.

As homework, the teacher could ask their students to watch the whole film in English. Since they've probably seen it in Spanish already this would help them to concentrate more on listening.

Activity 13: Blogs on education

Here are the blogs that we analyzed before creating our own.

This blog is aimed to learners of Korean who want to improve their grammar skills or simply are interested in starting to learn a new language. The blog features a main section in which the content is displayed and a side bar including several applications such as: A video bar, links to online dictionaries, links to listening and speaking practice websites, a “word of the day” application, a PDF version of their grammar content available to download and other links to personal and miscellaneous webs. The sidebar also features a list of sections divided by content (grammar points) for both beginners and advanced learners and a list of special expressions. The posts in the blog are also categorized by the use of tags (tag words) listed on the side bar to facilitate the navigation of the web.

‘Japoneando’ is a blog created by a Spaniard, dedicated to learners of Japanese language. Their lessons are mainly based on video classes and their posts do not include much written content. Their sidebar includes a list of the people that follow them on Facebook and links to other blogs on the same matter. This web is aimed to its spread through social webs such as Twitter and Facebook.

It is a very useful blog because for each unit of vocabulary it links you to different activities which are quite interactive. This makes the learning interesting since kids have to use a computer. We find the same thing with the grammar stuff provided in the blog.
The blog is, generally, quite colorful, making it attractive to the kids. It is divided in units, which makes it very easy to use since it is clearly structured. It is very visual thanks to the several videos and images it uses.
