Activity 10. Listening tips

Read the article and write two paragraphs. Check your list. Is there anything you would like to change?

At first, the teacher should take into account the level of the listening and to make it as s/he will be the students. S/he should choose a topic adapted to students’ interests in order to catch their attention. There is a great variety of listenings. According to students’ interests, the teacher should choose listening with different accents, lectures, dialogues, and so on. Once s/he has chosen the listening, s/he should have a look at the keywords and know the new vocabulary. S/he should use other files or activities to reinforce the listening activity such as transcripts, visual images and readings.

Once s/he is in class, s/he introduces the topic with a warm up activity related to vocabulary, grammar structures or an oral debate in order to encourage students to participate in the activity. S/he should teach previous strategies to do the listening activity. One strategy might be to know the unknown vocabulary. Besides, students and the teacher should review question by question and comment on them in order to clarify misunderstandings. They might also predict and guess possible answers for the questions.
