Activity 12: Hot Potatoes

'Hot Potatoes' is the name of a program formed up by 5 different applications that allow anyone create interactive exercises for the internet. These five possibilities of creation are: multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword and matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises.

We used 'Hot Potatoes' to design two activities aimed to help English students with the hard task of learning the irregular verbs.

Gap-fill task
For this exercise we chose the first chapter in the literary classic 'Peter Pan'. Later we erased the verbs from the text in order to ask our students to choose between the simple or the irregular form of each verb as the correct answer.

Matching task
This is a simple exercise in which students must match each infinitive verb with its correct past form from a given list.

Positive Points: 'Hot Potatoes' is a very user frendly program. We didn't encounter any kind of difficulty when using it and the results are very good. We think it is a highly useful tool for any web, blog, wiki or community online centered in education. Also, the fact that the exercises provide instant feedback/corrections to the students using them is great.

Negative Points:
